| The Art of Prior Art has
several meanings. It first refers to the skills set and process by which we
identify, locate and evaluate items for consideration as prior art. A
prior art search is non-deterministic. That is, the outcome is not known in
advance.
Our successful approach comes from broad professional experience. This includes forming a succinct understanding of the patent and claims to start, organizing the search, travel, contacts, instinct, knowledge of information repositories, persistence, and knowing when to stop. (And it certainly helps to have designed online library catalogs). The 'Art' also applies to the charting and graphical presentation of the analysis and findings. Another meaning of 'the Art of Prior Art' is the observation of artistic, or other surprising and notable qualities of materials encountered during the hunt. Not wanting to waste something good, these links take you to portions of the Serendipity File... A Collection of Prior Art encountered while looking for something else, but that may be useful someday.
